In Sanskrit its name means ‘the vitality of the horse’ and it imparts such energy; somnifera promotes sleep. An herb of wide value, generally known as the ginseng of Ayurvedic medicine and is an ancient medicinal herb with multiple health benefits. Upright shrub exceeds 2' with inconspicuous green-to-yellow flowers ripening to red berries. Roots are dried at the end of the growing season and used internally powdered or tinctured (other plant parts are toxic if eaten). Herbalist Deb Soule harvests the roots when the berries ripen in mid-October. Her delightful book, How to Move Like a Gardener, has more details about ashwagandha. Needs warmth and light to germinate. Sow indoors in the spring and transplant out in June; prefers dry stony soil in sun or partial shade. Perennial in Zone 10, grown as an annual in the north.

Germinating ashwagandha seeds can be straightforward if you follow these steps:

Soak the ashwagandha seeds in warm water for 24 hours. This helps to soften the seed coat and improve germination rates.

Planting the Seeds:
Fill seed trays or small pots with a well-draining seed starting mix or potting soil.
Plant the seeds about 1/4 inch deep in the soil. Lightly cover them with soil.

Watering:
Water the soil gently to keep it moist but not waterlogged. Ensure the soil is consistently moist during the germination period.

Creating a Greenhouse Effect:
Cover the seed trays or pots with a clear plastic cover or plastic wrap. This helps to retain moisture and warmth, creating a mini-greenhouse effect.

Light and Temperature:
Place the seed trays or pots in a warm location with indirect sunlight. Ashwagandha seeds germinate best at temperatures between 70-85°F

Monitoring and Maintenance:
Check the soil moisture regularly and water as needed to keep it moist.
Remove the plastic cover once the seeds have germinated to prevent mold growth.

Transplanting:
Once the seedlings have developed a few true leaves and are strong enough to handle, they can be transplanted to larger pots or directly into the garden.
