This beautifully illustrated publication describes in detail the collaborative project ‘Clouds’ conducted by the artists Lucy + Jorge Orta, with students from the School of Architecture in Versailles (énsa-v), in 2011. It was published to coincide with an exhibition of the resulting sculptures at La Maréchalerie contemporary art centre as well as the sculpture warehouse of the Louvre and Château de Versailles, in France.
Researching creative ways to re-use waste, the artists and students demonstrate that plastic water bottles have the potential to become sculpture, architecture, furniture and even clothing. We gain insight into the artists’ ecological motivations through an interview conducted by the chief curator of La Maréchalerie. And the essays by art historians, architects and philosophers draw parallels to the paradox of plastic waste; a vital commodity for communities like the Zabaleen in Cairo, Egypt who rely on recycling for their livelihoods, at the same time a dangerous pollutant that is accumulating in our oceans at a vast rate and destroying marine life.
We highly recommend this publication for people interested in innovate approaches to recycling plastic.
