The Art Nouveau style is soft, mystical, and romantic.
It is a current of artistic renewal developed at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th centuries, during the period known as fin de siècle and belle époque.
The pale colors and undulating curves helped to establish a relaxing aura.
Art Nouveau jewelers were influenced by representations of nature in Japanese art; they sought inspiration in the natural world.
Orchids, lilies, ferns, snakes, dragonflies, and butterflies were predominant motifs in Art Nouveau jewelry.

The depiction of the female body in jewelry became the most significant innovation of that era.
Until that time, female motifs only appeared in cameos.
The caste system of the 19th century simply could not imagine women wearing jewelry that highlighted sensual, seductive, and desirable beauty.
However, women of the Art Nouveau era readily responded to this style challenge, and jewelry featuring beautiful and mysterious nude fairies or nymphs became very popular.

Defining Art Nouveau would exhaust a dictionary; however, it can be summarized by certain keywords such as flowing, eclectic, unconventional, organic, and natural—the list goes on. A movement that originated at the turn of the 1890s, with precursors like Aubrey Beardsley's Aestheticism, which focused on the organic representation of lines, and William Morris's Arts and Crafts movement, the style is a hybrid of both. Its defining features are sinuous curves and the depiction of natural and painterly forms of organic elements with ornamentation. The movement became popular in 1890–1910 in Europe and the US, and it was in Belgium that the term Art Nouveau was coined to describe the artwork of Les Vingt and S. Bing in Paris. The style has different names in various places: Jugendstil in Germany, Sezessionstil in Austria, Stile Floreale in Italy, and Modernismo in Spain.

Art Nouveau, also known as Modern Style, Modernism, or Sezession—different names it took depending on the country—refers to a style of innovation that emerged around 1890 and lasted until the outbreak of World War I. Europe was experiencing the Belle Époque, a time of economic prosperity and optimism for progress, scientific and technological advancements (it was the era of the Titanic, to give you an idea). It was within this passion for technology that this movement arose, seeking a return to craftsmanship as a guarantee of quality.

Art Nouveau emerged heavily influenced by the Arts and Crafts movement that had appeared a decade earlier in the British Isles and which, following the ideas of John Ruskin and William Morris, rejected industrially produced objects, considered to be of poor technical and design quality, and advocated for artisanal production as well as a return to nature as a source of inspiration, abandoning the historicism of Romanticism.

Another very important characteristic of this movement, which Art Nouveau would adopt as its guiding principle, is the aspiration to create a universal art form, encompassing all levels (this is clearly seen in Gaudí, who even designed the doorknobs of his houses) and integrating into all spheres of society. Neither movement would achieve this latter goal, as artisanal production and the use of natural materials would make the product so expensive that it would only be affordable for the upper classes.

It is a colorful, naturalistic and symbolist art in which the represented motifs will have a meaning: thus the owl will represent the subconscious (Freud's ideas are spreading), the snake sexuality, insects the earth and metamorphosis, the peacock energy.... until reaching the pre-Raphaelite woman, the nymph woman, sensual, with long hair like the representations of Alfons Mucha.

René Lalique was the leading figure of Art Nouveau jewelry; his pieces adhered to the style's principles, creating evocative, dynamic objects by mixing materials, elevating them to the status of works of art. This is important because, due to their large size (the snake pectoral measures 21 x 14 cm!), these weren't so much jewelry meant to be worn as collectibles. Again, it's crucial to consider the historical context: these pieces were highly extravagant and didn't appeal to all sectors of society. In fact, his most prominent clients were actresses who wore his pieces in performances, such as Sarah Bernhardt.
