ABOUT RESIN INCENSE

Resin incense, known as traditional loose incense or charcoal incense, is produced from the fragrant sap of particular trees and shrubs and once hardened becomes a natural incense. These incenses can be of single origin or the incense siftings can be blended together with other resins, herbs, spices, flowers, oils and incense powders to create an herbal incense. This type of incense is burned over charcoal tablets and can be used for many purposes including but not limited to aromatherapy, calming, grounding, relaxation, meditation, ceremonies and spiritual practices.

TO BURN RESIN FOR INCENSE -
YOU WILL ALSO NEED:

• A charcoal burner. This can be as simple as a heat-resistant, ceramic bowl. Just remember that whatever you burn your resin in will need to be able to withstand extreme heat.
• Small Rocks, Sand, or Natural ash. This will provide insulation for your burner. Charcoal can get very hot! (Up to 1500°F.)
• Tongs or tweezers. Used for holding the charcoal while lighting it.
• Incense of your choice.

HOW TO GET STARTED -
BURNING YOUR RESIN INCENSE:

*Always use an appropriate heat-resistant incense burner placed on a coaster, burn in a well-ventilated area (crack a window), and never leave hot or burning charcoal or incense unattended. (Read all our common sense tips at the bottom of this listing).

1. If using a bowl burner: place your burner on a heat-resistant coaster then add a base of sand, rocks, or ash in your burner forming this into a cone shape as best you can. The cone shape will allow for better airflow around the charcoal. If using a mesh screen burner: place your burner on a heat-resistant coaster then position your screen so that it creates a concave (bowl) shape.

2. Using tongs to hold the charcoal tablet, apply flame to the edges of the tablet for about 10 seconds using a lighter, taper lighter or candle. Some charcoals are self-igniting ( these contain potassium nitrate) they will spark as you light it, this is normal. Never hold the charcoal in your hand.

3. Place the charcoal in your burner and allow the charcoal to heat thoroughly before adding incense. This can take about 15 minutes. Wait until the charcoal is covered with a thin layer of grayish ash. Adding incense before your charcoal is heated through will cause the charcoal to prematurely extinguish. DO NOT TOUCH THE BURNER AFTER ADDING THE CHARCOAL – THE BURNER WILL BE VERY HOT AND IT WILL BURN YOU. HANDLE YOURSELF WITH CARE.

5. When the charcoal is ready add a very small amount of your incense on top of the charcoal. If you have larger chunks of incense, you can place them to the side, near or touching your charcoal to allow for better heat control. Other similar methods suggest creating a tin foil cup as a vessel for your incense, then placing that on top of or near the charcoal; or adding a layer of ash or salt on top of the charcoal then adding incense. Experiment with what works best for your incense.

6. Allow the resin to burn, releasing its fragrant smoke. If or when the resin begins to char (this is normal), use tongs to knock it off the tablet and add a new fresh piece. When the smoke starts to thin out, add more incense as desired. Charcoal should last around 20-30 minutes.

7. When you’re finished, allow the charcoal to completely cool and extinguish itself in the burner.

- Do not leave burning charcoal or burning incense unattended.
- Burn incense in a well-ventilated area.
- At no time should you touch the charcoal tablet once lit or attempt to move the charcoal burner. Both will be very hot and will burn you.
- Charcoal and burners will get very hot, always burn in a heat resistant burner on a heat resistant surface or on a coaster - failure to do so could result in damage to your countertop.
- Make sure incense will not contact with anything that could catch fire, such as curtains that may be blown by the wind and other flammable objects.
- If you suffer from asthma or any other respiratory condition incense may cause irritation.
