Information about the red oak The home of the red oak is in eastern North America. It was imported into Switzerland as early as 1691. Originally planted as a park and avenue tree, it is now used for forestry in many areas of Europe. The red oak is one of the most important deciduous tree species in eastern North America and a common mixed tree species in species-rich deciduous forests in the lowlands and low mountain ranges. In the Appalachians it occurs up to over 1600 meters. Rather low demands on the soil The red oak has rather low demands on the soil; It loves loose, lime-poor soils in a humid, mild climate. Even in locations with a moderate supply of water and nutrients, it still shows remarkable growth performance. It is only advisable to use it on loamy or clayey soils with strong water retention, waterlogging, calcareous or very dry locations. Compared to the native oak species, the red oak is more resistant to pests and diseases, somewhat more tolerant of shade and, above all, stronger in growth. When young it has a taproot system and later a strongly branched cardiac root system and can be described as “storm-proof”. Leaves are the trademark The red oak owes its name to the leaves, which turn bright orange to red in autumn. The otherwise dark green leaves are relatively large at ten to 25 centimeters, very deeply cut with lobes that taper to a point at the front. The gray bark remains smooth for a long time, later a not very deeply cracked bark is formed.
