A fabulous antique French indigo blue chemise from the 19th century.

Hand sewn from natural homespun linen and hemp cloth, in a lovely faded indigo blue. Open collar, heavy gathering at the back and sleeve ends. Gusseted under the arms for ease of movement and open sides at the bottom. Made from linen or a linen and hemp blend of homespun fabric. Hand dyed with a
lovely stonewashed look.

This is a wonderfully made and historical piece of French history.

A generous size, the smock measures ..

40" chest, 19.5" across the shoulders, front length 35", back
length is 41", sleeve length 21" (taken from under arm).

In pretty amazing condition when you consider its' age and usage. There are some areas of wear in the linen/hemp fabric, with some tiny stains. This strong linen hemp cloth was made to last for generations, which indeed it has, although now after more than a hundred years of launderings, the fabric is a lot less stiff than it would have been as new and drapes beautifully.

The perfect smock for casual wear, a coverall for artist or potters or simply as rural chic display ..a truly delightful historic textile with oodles of French country charm. All cleaned, pressed and ready to enjoy.
