This PDF sewing pattern shows you how to make a gorgeous Penguin Christmas Wool Applique Penny Rug.
Penny Rugs (or Candle Mats as they are often called today) became popular in the mid 19th century. These rugs, made from scraps of felted wool, were used as decorative table toppers, chair seat covers, wall hangings and floor mats. Often a penny would be sewn into the rug for good luck.
The original style was for circles of wool to be sewn together in layers, using the coins as templates, however now you will find everything from Halloween Pumpkins to St Patrick's Day Shamrocks on these pretty decorative mats.
They can be used, as shown in the pictures, with a candle in the centre, or they can be made to be hung on the wall or simply to add a splash of colour to a side table.
Penny rugs are fun and easy to make, you do not need a lot of experience and would be ideal for an older child.
