French Edme SAMSON Porcelaine de Paris, France Hand-Painted Baluster form Lidded Urn decorated w/ Heraldic Armorial Crest Shield & Flowers

Edmé Samson (born in Paris, 1810; died in Paris, 1891), founder of the ceramics firm Samson, Edmé et Cie (commonly known as Samson Ceramics), was a famous copyist (and perhaps forger) of porcelain and pottery...Samson began his career by making service and set piece replacements in the late 1830s... In 1845 he opened the ceramics firm Samson, Edmé et Cie at 7, Rue Vendôme (later Rue Béranger) in Paris, with the intention of supplying reproductions of ceramics on display in museums and private collections...


For your consideration, I am offering a rare - hand-painted and decorated with polychrome enamels enhanced with gold porcelain - large Baluster form Lidded Urn that is just bursting with History... The pattern was designed by Edme Samson of the Samson & Co., manufactured possibly by Porelaine de Paris and was meant to resemble an antique of the period..Made in France....

One of his most interesting works was his Heraldic or Armorial Crest pieces...This Lidded Urn fits into that category. This beautiful design looked as if it had belonged to a Knight or Royalty... Although interesting, I do not believe that this Achievement (what some may call a "Coat of Arms"), belongs to an actual Royal family, but rather a representation of such. So, on the top of this box, is a handpainted Achievement, which encompasses the Shield, being held by two supporters..The painted Crown sits on top of the center shield...Hand-Painted Chine de Commande style lily flowers border along the sides of the center design....Will also see the Bianco sopra bianco design (means white on white) - porcelain glaze swirled lines..the rims are lined in gold with thin red outline..

The underside is glazed and has the red Samson faux Chinese mark...

Approximate size to the Lidded Urn is 9.75 inches tall with lid - 8.75 inches exclusive of the lid - 1.5 inches top rim diameter - 2.25 inches base diameter....

Light signs of previous use with its vintage timeline should be expected ...The hand-painted design is nice and clean - I do notice very slight gold wear but is still 90% intact...The enamel painting does look nice.. Some small tape residue on the lid - I did not try to was or scrub off....

A true example of utter craftsmanship and talent. Examine photos carefully...

+++According to the book Samson, Genie de L'imitation by Florence Slitine, 2002, on page 182, these red pseudo-Chinese marks were not used by Samson, according to an M. Garcia who was the last house decorator for Samson. The book also states that these marks were used by the company Porcelaine de Paris according to a decorator, Mme. Vilpoux, who worked for Porcelaine de Paris from 1949-1980 and the marks were used on the "Far East" style of decorated porcelain.+++
