Aleuts from the Aleutian Islands hunted in their Baidarkas or Umiaks for seal, otter, and whales. They faced the open sea in those skin covered kayaks that were watertight. This depicts a hunter searching for a seal.

Rhonda Shelford Jansen is Alutiiq and Aleut heritage and is a shareholder of the Aleut Corp and CIRI. She is a member of the Ninilchik tribe. She has been in and around the fishing industry her whole life. she comes from a long line of Alaskan fishermen. Her husband and youngest son continue the tradition. Painting and photographing fishing, Alaska Native, and nautical scenes is a perfect fit.
