The Egyptian deities were different from many of the other pantheons, such as Greek and Roman, for it was believed that the gods first ruled on earth and passed
along their knowledge to the people. When the gods grew old and feeble, they passed on the throne and retired to the heavens to watch over the people. Although
the gods no longer ruled on earth, they were still looking on, guiding the people and providing for them. This concept inextricably linked magic and religion in ancient Egypt, and what affected one affected all. If the Nile did not provide enough silt during the annual inundation, crop production would suffer, and all would feel the devastation. So when we look at the Egyptian deities related to prosperity, they are fertility gods, gods of the harvest or agriculture, or creation deities. The first sheaves of grain, the first bunch of grapes, the first calf slaughtered would be offered to the gods in thanks, as well as to ensure the continued beneficence of the gods. The sketches below provide a concise introduction to prosperity deities. In order to fully understand Egyptian mythology and beliefs, a great deal more study would be necessary and could realistically take months or years.
