Our family’s starter, lovingly named “Bodie,” has roots that trace directly back to San Francisco’s historic sourdough culture. My mom, now 93 years old, bought it from a famous San Francisco bakery in 1951 while traveling with my dad, a retired U.S. Navy Rear Admiral.
The baker told her the culture had been in continuous use since 1850, and that the founder’s family had kept it alive for 40 years before opening the bakery — giving Bodie a traceable history all the way back to the late 1700s.

Since 1951, Mom has lovingly fed this heirloom sourdough starter every day. She’s a retired schoolteacher who still maintains Bodie with care, passion, and heart — just as she has for over 70 years. My sister and I grew up on Bodie’s incredible bread, pancakes, and pizza dough, never realizing we were tasting history.
Today, we help Mom share Bodie with other bakers through our family Etsy shop. When you buy from us, you’re not just getting a starter — you’re joining our family’s legacy and supporting our mom in her retirement years.
