Witch’s Note:
The maypole stands out in history, and are still used in Beltane celebrations today. It represents life (love and fertility), & that when life is enjoyed, danced through, and engaged in ….the end result is a colorful & beautiful grand design. It’s almost like the end result, after the Maypole dance; the colored ribbons intertwine in what seems to be a well thought out style. Personally, I believe that the universe & joyful energies, create a random design… that isn’t really random at all but, is the bigger picture of how life can be beautiful
Traditionally, a maypole was erected for the fire festival of Beltane, & used to celebrate marriage and fertility rites. The pole was decorated with ribbon and flowers to honor the earth goddess, & small birch trees were planted to honor the gods. In fact, young men would decorate small birch branches with flowers, & toss it onto the roof of the girl they favored.
During the festival, young maidens would dance around the pole while holding a ribbon. After a while, the intertwined ribbons created a beautiful design. One has to think, that that beautiful representation of life wouldn’t have come into being without people joyfully engaging in the love of life.
