Cheng’s portrayal of girls, people of color, single-parent and lower-income families, recluse introverts, and the kids who act out in class are positive and fair-minded–encouraging young readers to really get to know others and to look beyond the perceptible, seemingly insurmountable, differences between themselves and those around them. Eunice is a positive role model and engaging hero—her growth throughout the novel, open acknowledgement of her flaws, and persistence in bettering herself provides the kind of example that any adult would be proud to introduce to the youth in their lives. It’s exciting that recipes for delicious foods being consumed by the characters are included—great for reading breaks. Cheng is a talented storyteller who provides a story to grow the next generation to be open-minded and cultivate strong women
