Belka and Strelka, Soviet Space dogs brooch, black print on white plastic with a rainbow flame.

My own space dogs illustration, cut into lino, printed onto shrinking plastic, then shrunk.

The brooch you buy will be almost identical to the one pictured - the same lino cut will be used to produce each space dog print and the same coloured pigment ink to print it. Due to subtle differences in the way each print is inked, each space dog badge is unique.

On August 19, 1960, the Soviet Union launched the Sputnik 5 capsule containing a pair of dogs, Belka ("Whitey") and Strelka ("Little Arrow.") They were the first living creatures to go into orbit and return safely. And they gave the Soviets confidence to send a human into space less than a year later.

The Belka and Strelka rocket is glued securely to a bar pin brooch back.

The rocket itself measures 2.5cm (1") wide by 5cm (1.5") long, and is blank (ie, white) on the reverse. The brooch is very light - the plastic, although quite rigid, is no more than 2mm thick.
