'Bamboo' ref ESS 1787 was designed in Bradford, Yorkshire, England at jacquard furnishing fabric manufacturers E& S Smith by head designer Mr Allan Stringer in 1984. This bold oriental design was created for use as a bed-spread for an international hotel chain. After the designing process of this fabric, the pattern was repeated by Allan, a skilled jacquard craftsman, onto a graph paper called "point paper". The 'art' was then used to create loom cards, making each stitch into a binary code. Allan then read the weave codes to produce perforated loom cards read by the jacquard machine which made the fabrics. The design to weave process was not a speedy one in 1984. However 'things' were about to change a few years later when CAD and then electronic jacquard machines were invented. Witnessing the new technology arriving Mr Stringer who had over 40 years experience of traditional 'slow' textile design decided to retire in 1986!
