Why a shirt jacket? It is a lightweight layering piece which can be worn all year round. It can be worn as a shirt as is, or over a tank top in summer, over a t shirt or even over another button down shirt in spring and autumn and as an additional color layer in winter. It can also serve as a more casual jacket for a business meeting or semi formal wear.

Why use a man's button down shirt? All of the elements are already there, the buttons, cuffs and collars and the shirt can be sized to fit you perfectly.

Materials required for this project - 2 -3 men's button down shirts

Tools: Domestic sewing machine with zig zag stitch option or a Serger if you have one – Spools of polyester thread in a coordinating color - Hand-sewing Needles – Fabric Scissors – Seam Ripper – Long thin sharp pins and magnet – Tailor's Chalk – Iron and Ironing Board

Size of Finished Product
The technique can be used to make shirt jackets in any size as the base shirt is one that fits you.

Construction Techniques
You will learn to make a shirt jacket with darts and a gentle flounce bottom. You will also learn how to create a peplum and construct a collar.

Basic machine sewing skills required.

Now I can finally refashion all those shirts that don't fit me. There are so many wonderful ideas. I learnt to create a peplum and draft a collar. The instructions are easy to follow and very detailed with plenty of inspiration to develop my recreating skills.

Look at what I just made during my quarantine! I took a top that was baggy and too long - but I love the colors and unusual floral pattern - and I jazzed it up by shortening it and adding this super cute peplum bottom.
