Large Pottery Lighthouse or Watchtower - Revolutionary War Battle Scene - Miniature British and Patriot Soldiers - Watch Tower with Beacon

A tall, heavy hand-crafted lighthouse/watchtower. It appears to be the scene of a Revolutionary War battle between the Patriots and the Redcoats. When I first saw it, I just thought it was an unusual decanter. The center is hollow and there is an opening on top, just like a decanter missing its cork. But, obviously that can't be right since the windows are open to the center, meaning that there's no way it could hold liquid. That means it's an art piece. A really, really intriguing one. I just wish that the artist had signed it. But if they did, I have been unable to find it.

The only information is on the base. The number 13519 has been incised into the clay and somebody (the artist or someone else?) attached a paper label with another number, D-1712117-10. So basically the buyer will receive not only this wonderful sculpture but several mysteries. Who made this? Does it represent an actual tower or lighthouse? And...if so, was this a specific battle? This would make a wonderful gift for a history buff. It's perfect for display on a mantel, a small table or desktop. The main thing to remember is that it is tall and even though it's heavy, it's also fragile. So it would need to be in a place where it would be difficult to knock over.

The beacon top has a smooth glaze. It's attached to the base that looks rustic as though it were made of brick and stone. To create that effect, it feels and looks as though the artist added a lot of gritty sand and maybe even some tiny pebbles to the clay. The top and bottom sections are glued together using a clear glue (slightly visible in between the two parts). The soldiers are plastic and have been attached with some type of white glue (?)

Condition: It's rustic but really in excellent condition. There are only 2 possible flaws. The first is the opening at the top--not sure if something is missing there or whether it was just made that way. The other is the soldier hanging out the window. It looks like he once held something in his hands and it's now gone. If you're a little crafty, you could probably cut a toothpick and paint it to look like a weapon. I have lots more photos so just ask if you'd like to see specific areas.

Size: approximately 14.25" high
base is 6.25" diameter
Soldier is about 1.5" tall

Shipping: The postage may look high but that's because of the weight and box size. This is a very heavy piece of pottery and will require a larger box and lots of padding to protect it. If I'm able to find any way to send it safely for a lower price, I promise to refund excess shipping to you. My main goal on shipping is to have it make it to you safely (especially when it as fragile and irreplaceable as this).
