The Solar System

This sampler is inspired by an unsigned example in the collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum dated 1811. It is described as a ‘rare example of astronomy in a needlework exercise’.

My version is much updated, with a design that references the sizes of the planets (not to scale!) rather than their orbits. The 1811 sampler features a planet called Georgium Sidus, which is what Uranus was originally named in honour of King George III of England. In my sampler I’ve updated this to Uranus, the modern name originally proposed by German astronomer Johann Elert Bode.

You may also note that Pluto is missing. Pluto was discovered in 1930 by Clyde Tombaugh and declared to be the ninth planet from the Sun (so it doesn’t appear in the sampler of 1811). However in 2006 during the General Assembly of the International Astronomical Union Pluto was demoted from planet to dwarf planet, where it now sits alongside Ceres, Eris, Makemake and Haumea.

The design includes the year 2020 as this was the year I completed the design, and my name. However you may want to change these details. In order for you to do so I have included two mini samplers with the numbers and letters that you will need. These mini-sampler designs are great for a quick and portable project, and potentially to use up any left-over floss!
