Anyone who has ever observed gerbils will be familiar with the purposeful way they attack a paper towel roll, an empty tissue box, or any other cardboard "toy." While chewing for gerbils and other rodents serves the critical purpose of keeping their ever-growing teeth from getting too long, they often chew with an intensity that seems to suggest a higher purpose. In this design, I illustrate what I imagine gerbils might be feeling when their flurry of chewing activity suddenly results in a pile of tiny cardboard pieces. This card also serves as a reminder to those who care for gerbils and other pocket pets to enrich their habitats with toys to chew, climb on, and hide in--a busy gerbil is a happy gerbil!
