This is an interpretation of the portrait of a girl in blue, executed in soft pastel on paper. The original work was created by the Dutch painter Johannes Verspronck, in 1641.
The girl stands against a neutral, even background, separate from the environment, so that all attention is focused on her person. This is accentuated by a subtle play of light and shadow. She looks at the viewer with a twinkle in her dark eyes. The work is intriguing to this day, perhaps not so much because of the technical gift with which it was painted, but mainly because of the contrast between her filial innocence and the striking straitjacket of her precious adult clothing, which according to contemporary standards is remarkable.
