Seller's description

A tall handled jug thrown by hand in a Ukrainian village. Forms like this stayed unchanged for generations, so a piece is dated by where it was found rather than by how it looks. This one is old country ware, made before the war and used in a household for water or milk.

It is the largest form in this kind of pottery, over ten inches, with a single loop handle pulled from the same clay as the body and joined by hand. The handle is the part collectors look for. It was the first thing to break, so jugs that still have theirs intact are far less common than the plain pots that survived in numbers.

At this height it is a floor piece. Tall dried branches, pampas, eucalyptus or bare twigs stand in it without support, and it holds a corner beside a chair, a fireplace or an entry on its own. Empty it still reads, because the silhouette with the handle is the whole point.

Measurements:
Height 10.6 in / 26.9 cm
Widest point 6.2 in / 15.7 cm
Base 3.2 in / 8.1 cm

This is larger than it looks on a screen. Please read the measurements before ordering.

Materials: local clay, wheel thrown and wood fired, unglazed.

Condition: the rim is chipped, shown in the photos. The body and the handle are sound. The rest is honest wear from long use, uneven colour and the roughness of an unglazed surface. Priced to reflect the condition.

As unglazed earthenware it suits dried arrangements and branches rather than water, live plants, or food. Display use recommended. Not intended for food contact or food storage.

In person the colour reads warm terracotta with darker patches from the fire, and it shows its age a little more than a photograph can capture, which is part of its character.

Pieces like this came from everyday village life across Ukraine, where they were carried on a shoulder yoke to fetch water and milk. It comes to you as found, with its patina intact. A gentle wipe with a dry or slightly damp cloth freshens it if you prefer a cleaner look. As a genuinely old piece it may carry a faint earthy scent at first, which airs out within a few days.

Shipping and packaging: the handle is the vulnerable part, so it is wrapped and braced separately inside the box. Dispatched within 1 to 2 days with full tracking. Typical delivery is 1 to 3 weeks. For US buyers, import duties are included in the checkout price, so nothing is owed on arrival.
