The "Scarlet Belle" North American Pitcher Plant is a beautiful example of a Psittacina hybrid. It is a cross between a psittacina and a leucophylla and has beautiful red pitchers with large hoods filled with white windows, like a magnificent stained glass window.
Unlike other sarracenia that grow long upright pitchers, the pitchers on "Scarlet Belle" grow outward in psittacina fashion, making it a more compact plant. It is a wonderful addition to a collection of sarracenias, especially during spring time when it shoots up a spectacular and fragrant red flower.
Like most North American pitcher plants, "Scarlet Belle" attracts insects with a lovely patch of sweet nectar right at the base of the lid. Insects are drawn to this nectar and are encouraged by tiny downward facing hairs to move down into the pitcher. At some point the insect loses its footing and falls down the tube. At this point the bug slowly converted into plant food through digestion by enzymes and bacteria. Yum yum!
Your new plant is a medium-sized plant about 10" across that fits well in a 2.25” pot and has pitchers about 5" in length. Growing instructions will be included.
Shipping, Soil & Pots
Your plant will be shipped with its roots carefully wrapped in a damp long fiber sphagnum moss. If you choose to add on soil and pots, you will receive a carnivorous-plant-safe 2.25” square, tall plastic container and a bag with enough carnivorous plant soil to fill it (may be either my mix of peat/perlite/sand, or long fiber sphagnum).
Growing Requirements
Sarracenias thrive when given sunny summers and winters that do not drop below freezing. They do well in bog gardens and terrariums.
Light - full sun
Soil - pure peat, peat-sand mix, peat-perlite mix, or long-fiber sphagnum
Fertilizing - do not apply fertilizer - if grown indoors, fill the pitcher with water and drop in bugs, dried bloodworms, or fish food no more than twice a month
Humidity - 50%+
Water - keep wet at all times, provide water that is low in salts and minerals such as rain or distilled water
Temperature - 45-90°F, can tolerate 20°F in the winter, 0°F if grown in the ground.
Dormancy - dormant in the winter
