Seller's description
In this listing we are pleased to offer a pretty rectangular shaped glass vase by Signe Persson-Melin for Hovmantorp Nya glassworks, Sweden.
Rounded corners and vertical striped pattern in relief.
Working with patterns in relief on the outside was one of the signature marks of Signe Persson-Melin in both her glass and ceramics work. For example our two relief tea cups for Gustavsberg also have a striped pattern (see our other listings, if not sold).
The vase is marked with a partly faded light golden Hovmantorp Sweden sticker label.
It is a relatively rare model. Moreover it is a nice size and very functional: easy to put to use and easy to clean.
About Hovmantorp:
Hovmantorp is a small town located in the glass tradition rich Småland region in southern Sweden and has a long glass tradition. It began with Hovmantorp's glassworks between 1859 and 1878. In 1889, Sandvik's glassworks was started and in 1905 Hovmantorp's Nya (meaning: new) glassworks which was built on the burnt down site of the first Hovmantorp glassworks and initially existed until 1968 but made a restart in the same year until it fully closed down in 1978. The last surviving company, Sandvik's glassworks, was closed in 2005. However when Bergdala Glassworks merged with Studioglas Strömbergshyttan under the name of Bergdala Studioglas and settled in Hovmantorp, a new small art glass production has since then graced the town again. Hovmantorp Nya's production reached its peak before WWII. The glassworks were particularly known for their technique of spray painting on glass, developed by Frantz Müller. Other designers who worked for Hovmantorp Nya include Carl J. Alexandersson, Hans Owe Sandeberg, Barbro Reyde-Sandeberg, Signe Persson-Melin, Elsa Söderberg and Rune Strand. Very little else is known about the company.
About the designer
Signe Persson-Melin (1925 - ) quit her schooling to work at a pot factory in Lomma. Later she studied at the Kunsthandsværkerskolen in Copenhagen from 1946–1948 and at the legendary Konstfack Art College in Stockholm from 1949 to 1950. It was in the period that Svenskt Tenn already bought her teapots and mugs and she would continue to design many items for Svensk Tenn. She debuted to a wider audience in 1953 at the Galerie Moderne in Stockholm and received her breakthrough at the H55 exhibition in Hälsingborg Helsingborg (where Stig Lindberg was also present, read above...) with spice jars with a tin glaze and heavy cork lid with the contents indicated in clear letters. In the 1950s and 1960s, she became known for rustic functional utility ceramics in simple forms as well as jugs and bowls in stoneware.
As from 1967 she worked as a designer at Boda glassworks alongside Monica Backström and Erik Höglund. She also had assignments for Höganäs ceramics, Kosta Boda, Hovmantorp glas and Rörstrand's porcelain factory.
In 1985, Signe Persson-Melin became Sweden's first professor of glass and ceramics design at the Konstfack Art College in Stockholm.
As stated in 1994 she designed for Gustavsberg after Hackmann abandoned the company. In a way she came to the rescue fearing that otherwise Europe's last remaining porcelain homeware manufacturer would disappear.
She formed a loosely associated design group called ReliefGruppen with a number of people she know through Konstfack. The ReliefGruppen created the Blond series for Design House Stockholm (whose founder Anders Färdig used to own Boda Nova) which was loosely based on the Relief series she made for Gustavsberg.
In 2004 she created an elegant teapot in tin for Svensk Tenn in honour of Estrid Ericson.
Many of her works can be found in modern art and design museum in various countries.
