Ceremonial drinking bowls were traditional in Kyivan Rus' (it was named "Bratyna", it comes from the word "brat" - brother) and Norway ("Kasa") since Medieval times.

Bratyna is a large vessel for group drinking. It has been known since the times of Kyivan Rus, used in the territory of Ukraine until the 18th century. Drinking with a Bratyna meant a rite of fraternization and sacred meaning. Warriors drank from these bowls, drawing wine glasses or ladles. Bratyna was called the ancestral cup.

The ritual of drinking from Bratyna was a symbol of unity, friendship, faithfulness. Bratyna was circled, and each guest drank a drink (usually wine or beer), passing it to a neighbor. This action confirmed the ancient Slavic phrase: “I called you to my bread and salt and to drink wine. From now you are my brother! ”. As a result of this rite, strife, old insults were forgotten, and spiritual affinity between the warriors arose.

Also, these ceremonial drinking bowls have been traditional in Norway since Medieval times (see the original prototype on the last photo). The original use of a bowl like this may have been for a prehistoric ceremony that involved the sacrifice of horses, but the bowls continued to be made for centuries.
