Historical-social INFO,
This is a piece of history, often visible in Memorial Museums,
where the island's customs and traditions are revisited,
discovering the traditional textile fibers and the use of the domestic loom.
Sicily was a leader in the natural textile fiber production,
it was one of the country's leading producers of hemp,
contributing to the local economic growth.
(ended around the 1960s due to competition from synthetic fibres)
The processes relating to the cultivation, treatment and use of textiles,
including the primary importance of the looms roles for all members of the family,
constituted the expressions of fundamental knowledge and skills
and contributed to the capitalization of objects of use as
necessary as they were significant and distinctive of social roles,
exsample of the contractual importance of the wedding 'trousseau'.
Therefore, this type of blanket or carpet was an essential part of the bride's dowry,
with MULTIPLE uses, one of all was the use as an insulation blanket or carpet on
the wool or straw mattresses.
