The Dockenbaret (aka starfish hat) existed in the first half of the sixteenth century in the Germanic speaking lands.

Pictorial evidence shows it was popular among individuals of varying classes, from the mercenary Landsknecht to the princesses of Saxony.

While we can’t say it wasn’t available in other colors, a survey of existing depictions would support the theory that it was most commonly available in black or red, with white being a lesser possibility. The silhouette of the hat is a low profile
with a smallish two-piece brim with at least one additional slash on each half. Points or small bows often secure additional slashes as a means to keep the brim from flopping down. It can be decorated with feathers, rings, beads, and pins.

Suggested fabrics:
x 1/2 yd of 1.2 mm thick wool felt (36” wide)
x 1/2 yd of linen or silk for lining
x Feathers, finger-loop braid, aiglets, beads, rings, etc. for decoration
This pattern includes a 1⁄2” seam allowance (1.25cm) and both the seamline and cutting lines are included.

In the email you received, Click on the “View your files on Etsy” button, which will take you to your downloads screen. Click the download button. If you have not received an email, then on the Etsy site, click on the dropdown arrow next to “YOU” at the top left of your screen, and choose “Purchases and Reviews” from the dropdown. Scroll down to the pattern you wish to print, and click on the “Download Files” button which will take you to the downloads screen. Click the download button.

In the pop up box, choose to open with Adobe Acrobat. Adobe Acrobat Reader is a free software that you can download here https://get.adobe.com/reader/otherversions/. We highly recommend using Acrobat reader to open the file since it was created to be printed from this pattern. We cannot guarantee that it will print accurately from other programs.

The file will open up in Adobe Acrobat Reader. Click on the print icon and the print box will appear. Make sure that the bubble for “actual size” is selected. Click the Print Button.
