More About The Printing Process:

The platinum and palladium printing process was created and became quite popular in the mid to late 19th century. It uses platinum and/or palladium salts instead of silver as the light sensitive material.

The resulting Platinotype, as they are often called, are very permanent and were originally valued for this reason. Later, the process was appreciated more for its aesthetic qualities, and became favored among art photographers.

Today, photographers are again embracing the art of creating platinoype prints because of their unique beauty, and due to the fact that they can literally last for centuries, making them terrific family heirlooms.

My process for creating the print starts with making a “digital negative” of the image by printing it on clear transparency film with a professional inkjet printer.

I then mix a small amount of the light sensitive emulsion which includes palladium and platinum metal salts in solution. I brush this onto the paper using a regular art paint brush. This is what causes the uneven borders on the print. Although it is possible to avoid these borders, many artists feel that they add to the unique, fine art feeling of the image.

After drying, the paper is ready to be exposed to UV light. I place the “negative” I created on the computer onto the treated paper, sandwich them together under glass, and expose for several minutes in a UV light box. Exposure to the UV light creates a chemical reaction, which causes platinum and palladium metal deposits to form in the surface of the paper, creating the image.

After exposure, I “develop” the print using developing chemicals, then wash the print in clearing agents and water for approximately 30 minutes.

At that point, all that is left to do is let the print dry, and it’s finished!
