Llama Sanctuary Art Yarns - Super Bulky Bumpy Llama & Alpaca Rug Yarn

This exquisite Art Yarn is spun from llama and/or alpaca fiber harvested at The Llama Sanctuary.

Pure, raw, llama/alpaca fiber, core-spun ‘Thick-and-Thicker’ in a tight wrap that provides a slightly bumpy finish of soft fiber, gently undulating, swelling and narrowing, breathing in and breathing out along its length. You might have guessed that I am very fond of this yarn!

Blended with a small amount of consciously sourced merino wool from a local flock and spun onto a cotton core to provide stability, this yarn has very little elasticity, making it an interesting choice for hair braids, dreadlocks, for yarn art or in a larger quantity, it can be used for rug-making.

Spinning directly from thick roving, with limited ‘draw’, creates a thick and dense, under-spun yarn that leaves the surface of the fiber softly open. This means the yarn is not particularly hard-wearing and will felt with use (or deliberate assistance), and offers an unusual appearance, both rustic and refined.

Each of these Art Yarns can vary in thickness from approximately 6mm to 12mm.

Care – Soak gently in luke warm water and mild detergent if required. Do not agitate. Lay flat to dry.

The Llama Sanctuary is not in the business of producing fiber, but a few of the llamas and most of the alpacas require shearing each year to prevent them from over-heating in the summer.
