IMAGE BACKGROUND:
————————————————————————-
“Mary, Undoer of Knots, is a devotion that speaks to the hearts of the suffering who have become entangled in our own vices and failings. In the related novena, we pray and entrust our specific “knots” to Her loving hands, learning how to let go of that which binds us. To be free of the weight of our own chains means our hearts and minds are free to accept God’s mercy and begin to do His will in our lives.
Deep in the thick of infertility I sought the consolation of Mary, Undoer of Knots. Years of praying for healing left me feeling broken, isolated, and despaired, causing a huge rift in my relationship with God, darkening almost every aspect of my life. In January of 2016 I turned to Our Lady to do what I’d been doing for years: to pray for healing. (Okay, to pray for a baby...) Upon finishing the novena, I felt something telling me “July.” July came and went uneventfully, but for the first time in the four years of struggling I had peace in my heart for whatever God’s will was. I figured I’d misinterpreted the message. After my Napro physician shared his opinion that we’d likely never be able to have a biological child we poured our hearts into the process we’d quietly begun months earlier: adoption. Our amazing son was born and entrusted to us by his first mama in October of 2017. (His story is also full of miraculous details of God’s providence, but it’s not mine to tell.) Three weeks after his birth I discovered against every logical explanation that I was expecting a baby who was born almost exactly nine months after our son... In July. Only later would I remember the quiet message of affirmation from the powerful Mother who helped to bring about healing not only of my heart but also of my body.
This image is a reimagined rendering of the original Baroque painting on which the devotion is based. Since it was an artist’s work and not based on an apparition, I took liberties with the appearance. She is typically depicted face down, attention focused on untying knots in her hands, surrounded by angels who have brought the tangled ribbons of plaintants’ lives to her. I wanted to show her motherly but powerful, gazing toward the devoted with reassurance of her love and powerful intercession. I chose to include important symbolism from the original painting: Mary with a crown of twelve stars adorning Her head, a sign of Her Queenship of the Apostles, whom she consoled and counseled after Jesus’ earthly departure, a blue mantle representing her glory as Queen of the Universe, her feet crushing the head of the serpent indicating her victory over Satan. She is suspended between heaven and earth, resplendent with light. I chose to omit the angels to center the viewers’ focus on Mary and her loving gaze.
