Rionnag (’star’ in Scottish Gaelic) is a colorwork hat using classic Sheltand motifs. With four colors total and only two colors per row, Rionnag would make a good intermediate colorwork project. Tukuwool Fingering makes a hat that is lightweight and warm; substitute another woolen-spun yarn to get the same effect.
Difficulty: Intermediate to Advanced. Techniques include working decreases in stockinette, and stranded colorwork worked from charts.
Sizes: Child/ Youth, Adult Medium, Adult
Large.
Finished Size: Approximately 17 (20 ¼, 23 ½)
in 43 (51.5, 59.5)cm circumference and 9 ¼ in
22 cm high.
Yarn: Fingering weight yarn: 65 (85, 105) yds
60 (78, 97)m MC, 40 (50, 60) yds 37 (46,
55)m CC1, 10 yds 10m CC2, 25 (30, 40) yds
23 (28, 37)m CC3. Shown in Tukuwool
Fingering (75% Finnish Landrace, 25% Texel;
213 yds/ 195m per 50g/ 1.7 oz): Humu (MC),
Tyyni (CC1), Kimo (CC2), Aava (CC3).
Gauge: 28 sts/35 rnds = 4 in 10cm in
stockinette st and stranded patt, blocked.
Needles: US #2 (2.75mm) 16 in circular
needles; US #2 (2.75mm) double-pointed
needles. Adjust needle size if necessary to
obtain the correct gauge.
Notions: Tapestry needle; stitch marker.
Notes: This hat is worked in the round; be sure
to swatch in the round in both stockinette and
the stranded pattern. You may need to go up or
down a needle size to obtain gauge for the
stranded pattern. Switch to double-pointed
needles when the crown becomes too small to
knit comfortably on the circular needle.
