Antique Royal Vienna Style Porcelain Lidded Jelly Jar with Raised Gilt Beaded Decoration and Matching Underplate

This elegant antique Royal Vienna style red and cream porcelain 3-piece jar set consists of a cylindrical jar with two handles, a domed lid with a handle at the top, and a matched under plate. The set features ornate decoration which includes gilt flowers and foliage. The front of the lidded jar bears a colorful Neoclassical image depicting a variation of the "Toilette de Venus" with a seated Venus attended by two ladies and a cherub. The oval image is surrounded by a gilt band with raised beads. The lid and handle of the jar are finished in a thick coat of gilt paint.

The jar was made to present and serve jelly, jam, or a container of condensed milk at the table and is equipped with a large circular opening in the base. The opening facilitates easy removal of a glass or tin insert by enabling the user to push up on the base so it can be lifted out. The lid was intended to keep the contents of the jar fresh while the under plate provided a place to rest a sticky spoon, preventing a mess at the table.

The jar is in very good condition with no chips, cracks, or repairs. As an antiques, the set shows signs of age consisting of wear to the gilding on the handles which is mentioned for accuracy. It should also be noted that there are some production related anomalies consisting of fleck of material caught in the glaze located on the underside of the under plate. The jar stands 5.25" tall when placed on the under plate and measures 5" tall on its own. The mouth is 3.375" across and the piece is 4.5" as measured from the outside edges of the handles. The circular opening in the base is 1.125" across. The lid is 3.625" across. The saucer is 5.75" from edge to edge. The set has a combined weight of 1lb. The underside of the jar and under plate bear a cobalt blue Bidenschild mark (generally known as the "beehive" mark) along with the word Austria. The jar has the hand painted number "139" in gilt while the plate has the hand painted number "158" in teal.

This gilded porcelain demitasse cup and saucer display beautifully and would be a fantastic addition to an existing collection of Royal Vienna pieces or works equally well as a stand alone decorative accent. An elegant antique find!
