This is a made-to-order rounding hammer that I forge from new 1045 mid carbon steel. After forging, I heat treat and temper the hammer and then fit the handle.
Rounding hammers have been used by farriers for years, and recently been popularized for blacksmithing by blacksmiths like Brian Brazeal and Alec Steele. The rounded face of the hammer is used primarily for aggressive drawing down steel in all directions. While the flat face is used to square the steel, bring it to its final dimension, and planish it. You can draw out steel even more aggressively and selectively depending on the angle you hold the hammer at. I grind each face up to a 120 grit finish, then I buff it out for a semi polished, semi satin finish. The eye is drifted from both ends to produce an hourglass double taper that gives a tight fit on to the handle. The handles I carve from hickory, which is the best wood available for striking tools. I carefully shape and contour the handle so that it's as comfortable as possible for swinging day in and day out. I work each handle down from 2" thick hickory. It takes longer for me to make handles this way, but I like to take the extra time and make what I believe is a more comfortable handle, with swells that fit the contours of your hand. that's the way I make all of my personal hammers. Then I hang the head with a purpleheart wedge, which holds the hammer securely and makes for visual contrast between the hickory and steel. After that I finish everything up by applying several coats of linseed oil to the hammer and handle.
I give the heads a hot-oiled finish, and you can see the deep bronze look on the hammer heads that is a natural result of the tempering process.
Every part of the process is done 100% by me, and with care this hammer will last for years of use. The hammer in the photo is 3lbs, which is my preferred weight for general forging and bladesmithing.

For an extra $20, I can dye your handle and seal it as well, I use highly concentrated dyes, seal it, and then apply linseed oil.
