The Cilice was in ancient times a fabric of goat or camel hair, also in use among the soldiers of the Roman army.
In the people of Israel the purposes of this ascetic use are varied. You could wear the cilice (sack):
- for mourning
- for penance, to obtain divine forgiveness
- to beg divine help, even in moments of grave danger

In other cases the prophets threaten the wicked by telling them that they will have to carry the sack.

After the coming of Christ, the use of the cilice spread rapidly even among Christians.
