St. Martin was a Roman soldier who cut his red soldier's cloak to share with a poor man on a very cold night. He went on to become a bishop and is often shown with geese.
Martinmas is celebrated on November 11 and often includes making lanterns and going on a lantern walk. It is a foreshadowing of the coming light of Christmas. It is a frequently celebrated holiday in Waldorf schools.
Sword is not included.
All of my dolls are handmade wire-wrapped dolls. I wrap them with cotton floss which has a lovely sheen and does not pill with age. They are usually about 3 inches tall and fully pose-able. Each are one-of-a-kind. I use natural wood beads for their head and try to incorporate natural items, like acorn caps, nuts or feathers when I have them.
In Waldorf tradition facial features and expressions are left up to his companion's mood. I never liked having a doll stare at me when she was supposed to be sleeping, blue-eyed when I wanted her hazel or smiling when she was supposed to be sad. They are similar in design to the dollhouse dolls my grandmother made for me. I have been making them for my children, family and church for 10 years.
They make great pocket companions, stocking stuffers and decorations. We use them for seasonal tables and to re-enact stories.
****5 and up. These dolls are not for young children as they have small pieces and can be a choking hazard. If you have any doubts about whether or not your child will want to munch on and decapitate the poor little things, wait a year or two before you purchase one. Headless fairies are not nice fairies.
