VajraVarahi stands in the center of her mandala facing the door of her palace, the way out of the mundane world into the world of spirituality, which is your own mind. She is fierce yet sweet, smiling but very intense in her devotion to growth and the fullfillment of her spiritual work. Her eyes flash as she comes towards you, her hair wild. She's naked except for her bone skirt that she made from the remains she found in the funeral pyers of cremation grounds where she lives.

This goddess represents a class of people in India that were so devoted to following a spiritual path that they left their social rank, their family and home, security and certainty, and went to live in cremation grounds. VajraVarahi's knife symbolizes that severing of all that was in her life in her quest to become:

"Gone beyond, gone beyond, gone way beyond, hail Enlightenment hail!"

Tibetan thangkas are full of symbols, they are a language in and of themselves, telling stories through images and concepts known to the people of the himalayan mountains.
