This legend of “The Christmas Spider” originated in Germany and the Ukraine.
It is said that once on a Christmas long ago a poor widow and her children had a tree but nothing for decorations. They went to bed on Christmas Eve and spiders wove webs in the branches while the family slept. They arose Christmas morning and gazed in amazement at the web covered tree. As the sun came up and the first rays touched the tree, the webs turned to silver and gold, creating the loveliest of all trees.
Since that time, Christmas trees have been hung with tinsel, and it is considered good luck to have a spider among the decorations on your tree.
