◾️STORY BEHIND THIS PICTURE :
The lion is undoubtedly an icon of strength and courage. Too often photographed from afar, I wanted a portrait captured from close, very close, for I had the immense privilege of photographing this lion just a few meters from me in South Africa in February 2020, without any cage separating us. The proximity allowed me to use a very short depth of field, which puts all the emphasis on the gaze of this majestic king. I chose a perfect profile portrait to the right to accentuate the look to the future. His eyes inspire nobility and courage despite worry about the grim future of wildlife, which is losing ground every year. Lions once ruled the savannah, but now extinction reigns.

This work of art has 2 specific objectives for those who will contemplate it every day. First, remember how nature faces a bleak future if man does not change his way of life. Second, to remember the importance of keeping your head up, staying strong and courageous even in dark times.

The high contrast black and white was a must for me. This dramatic style was exactly what it takes for the 2 purposes of this piece.

African lions have lost their crowns and are now fighting for the survival of their species. After being classified as critically endangered on the IUCN 2015 list of endangered animals, they see a dark future on the horizon. If the sad trend continues, in 2050, africa lions will be parts of the past.
