I am not a great at crochet but after a few false starts I was able to make this pattern. I really enjoyed it. Any beginner can do this. I could not find any super bulky yarn in brown anywhere, so I just held a 4 weight double. I also went down a size on the hook to get gauge. Made M size for my son’s friend 3 year old daughter.

This pattern was very well written and easy to follow! I'm no pro so if I was able to do it, you can too! My only heads up is on sizing. I made this for my 5-year-old who is average height/size, etc. and I ended up going with the size large. I think the smaller sizes are for babies/toddlers. Next time I'll also keep going around for at least 3 more rounds because it only came to the middle of the back of her head. I used a two bobby pins to keep it on so it worked fine, but it would be easier if it were a bit longer/deeper of a beanie. Lastly, I made the buns as the pattern describes and they looked fine, but I ended up rolling a pair of my husbands ankle socks into a donut shape (I cut the toe out) and I hot blued the yarn braid around the sock, then hot glued the bun to the hat, and whip-stitched it as well.

It sounds like you might have been using a smaller yarn than the pattern called for, this would result in a smaller size. The pattern calls for size 6 chunky yarn.
