ABOUT THE WRITER

sappho, an archaic greek poet from the island of lesbos who lived from 630 to 570 bce, is considered one of the greatest lyric poets of ancient times, with poetry that still has resounding influence on writers today. most of her work is now lost, and very little about her personal life is known; however, her writing come to symbolize love and desire between women, with english words sapphic and lesbian derived from her name and the name of her birthplace.
