What’s this about not using the first and last pages?

It’s to do with the way the book is made. I wanted one of the key features of my books to be that the decorative endpapers were not just plain but were a whole design feature in themselves. The endpapers are often scruffy or different on the back and so, for aesthetic reasons, I’ve glued the endpapers directly to the first and last folios. The glue is water-based however so, if you add a heavy wash onto those sides, the endpaper may delaminate from the first page. The notebooks and 170gsm cartridge-paper sketchbooks are made in the same way but the paper is not designed to have enough water added to it to make delamination a problem.

Are all your books unique?

Probably is the short answer. I’m reluctant to advertise my products as unique because then I have to be really careful about making them all different, but the reality is that I have limited supplies of the materials that I use to cover my books. Some of the fabrics I have in larger quantities than others and so they will undoubtedly make a reappearance at some point. The endpapers are more tricky and, for the most part, I only have enough to make a maximum of one A5 and one A6 book with each design. It is therefore highly likely that your book will be one of a kind :)

How will my book be delivered?

All of my products are dispatched using Royal Mail. The delivery method will be different depending on which item you ordered: As the thicker sketchbooks are more expensive and not replaceable, I dispatch those via Tracked 48. Tracked mail is however expensive, so I don’t include it as standard on the lower priced items to avoid artificially increasing the price. Depending on what you have ordered, I may dispatch it via first or second class standard mail. The method of delivery that I will use to send your item is written at the bottom of the listing description. Usually there are delivery upgrade options for increased tracking available at checkout if you would prefer.

Why is delivery so expensive?

The delivery price is what is set by Royal Mail for the size & weight category and the default shipping option I have selected. The size & weight category is what it is; unfortunately paper is heavy and books are fairly large in terms of postage sizes. The default shipping option is dictated by the value of the item you have ordered. Higher-priced items come with tracked shipping as standard as it has a higher compensation rate. Plus, the items with tracked shipping are one-of-a-kind; if it goes missing I can’t just ship you a direct replacement and that would be sad, because I want you to get the book that you love.

Why am I charged delivery for each item?

The items that I sell cover a wide range of postage size, weight and compensation categories. Most likely, if you order multiple items from my shop you will bump up the postage by one or 2 categories, which will be a good chunk more than the single item shipping cost. With the way that Etsy works, I can only guarantee being able to cover postage by collecting secondary shipping costs on most items. Once I have purchased shipping for your order I will refund you any excess you have paid in shipping costs. You’ll be able to check this as the cost of the shipping will be printed on the shipping label.

Why are your books all about the same price?

This one caught me out too. When I was planning my shop, I assumed that A6 books would be about half the price of A5 books, as they’re half the size right? Whilst true, unfortunately, they take almost exactly the same time to bind, so although the materials costs are cheaper, the amount I’m paid for making the book is broadly the same. As each one of the hardcover books takes around 2 hours to make, the labour costs are much more expensive than materials, which is why smaller books are only a little bit cheaper.

Do you offer a gift wrapping service?

Any items you buy from me will come wrapped, but I don't offer a customisable or seasonal wrapping service. As standard there will be a logo sticker on the front of the item which, on request, I can leave off and then you can give the item directly to the recipient.

What’s the deal with the pebblepeople?

Many years ago, I was tidying up and became frustrated with the amount of pebbles that I’d collected from beaches over the years for reasons that probably made sense at the time. Reluctant to throw them away I had the brilliant idea that I would paint them, stick eyes and feet on them and put them on a shelf instead of in a cupboard. The pebblepeople were born. Not long afterwards, pebblepeople became my handle online and it seemed natural to roll it into my brand identity. Sadly, the original pebblepeople eventually yellowed and I threw them away about 6 months before I came up with my brilliant shop idea; but they are immortalised in my logo. Instead, a new generation has risen; because life is too short to not have a bit of silliness.

Supplies for making crafts
Materials: 300gsm Watercolour Paper, Cardboard, Cotton Fabric, Decorative Paper, Linen Thread, Glue

A more traditional watercolour sketchbook, this A6 book is filled with 10 pages (20 sides) of 300gsm, cold-press watercolour paper. This sketchbook is slimmer than a typical sketchbook and is ideal for popping into a bag for some quick painting on the go.

The book has a hard cover bound in decorative paper with a vintage-style design. A beautiful wine-red fabric and strong, contrasting endpapers round the book off nicely.
