Vintage Ethiopian Coptic Pendant: Tribal Boho Silver Alloy Cross

Your Choice Of Four Vintage, Boho, Tribal, Ethiopian Coptic Cast Pendants With Pierced, Interwoven Knot Work Designs

These vintage Ethiopian coptic pendants have patterns of interwoven lines, similar to Celtic designs, which symbolize eternity. The finish is silver with a softly aged patina with darkened recesses. In some areas the design is pierced right through, letting light pass through.

Each one is unique as they are cast with the lost wax method and the mold is destroyed when the piece is removed.

#1. 61mm long (including the loop) by 31mm at the widest with a six point star design. The loop at the top has an inside diameter of 6mm.

#2. Just under 60mm long (including the loop) by 42mm at the widest. The design is a cross with a circular center. The loop at the top has an inside diameter of at least 5mm and is slightly ovoid.

#3. A cross style 69mm long (including the loop) by 44mm at the widest. The top loop at the top has an inside diameter of at least 8mm and is slightly squared.

#4. an even larger cross style at 81mm long (including the loop) by 52mm wide. The loop at the top has an inside diameter of at least 5mm and is slightly triangular.

Christian Ethiopians have worn cross pendants made from coin silver for well over 1600 years. These are made by using the lost wax casting method or they are cut directly from Maria Teresa silver coins. The metal for Coptic crosses ranges from coin silver( 80%) to a variety of mixed metals. The pieces in this listing are a mixture of white metals with no discernible silver content.

As trade increased and the supply of silver became more readily available during the 19th century, designs became more elaborate with symbols and patterns influenced by many other religious groups.
