Highlights
This antique clay canning jar is a wonderful specimen of a pre-glass preserving jar.
Jars of this sort were used to ferment and preserve food before glass jars and pressure canning.
This jar has an otter ring and an inner ring with a groove between them where a lid would have set.
There is a small chip and use scratches on the outer rim. There is also a spot on the bottom edge which may be a glaze chip, or just some missing glaze when it was made.
The dark brown (black in some light) glaze is smoother than may of this type of jar, though there is a small spot of missing glaze from the manufacturer.
Measurements, 7 in. tall x 5 1/8 in. diameter on the top, 3 3/4 in. diameter on the top.
This was sourced in the Catawba area of North Carolina and most likely is from the area. There are no makers marks.
