A vermihut or worm composter farm houses worms who make worm compost, vermicompost, a soil most gardeners would die for. This vermihut is made of solid wood, so it can breathe and give the worms a natural environment to live in. Each layer of the vermihut is one vermibin, and each vermibin has the bottom side covered in wire mesh to allow the worms to migrate through the hut but keep the soil in place.

A vermihut is often just called a vermibin.

When you purchase this vermihut, you will get: three bins and a lid, as well as a metal catch tray and two rails the bins all sit on, as shown in the photos. Each vermibin is fitted with 1/4" steel hardware cloth on the bottom, and handles for convenient lifting on the sides. The vermihut is topped with a lid. The catch tray for putting underneath the bin that will cleanly catch any excess moisture from the worm castings so it wont make a mess wherever it is. This catch tray sits in between two blocks of wood that the vermihut sits on. The worms are up to you!

Each vermibin is 12" x 15" x 4" (which would produce when full 672 cubic inches, 11L, 2.9 US gallons, or 46.5 cups of worm castings), so three stacked one on top of each other would make a vermihut that is ~ 12" x 15" x 12". I have found that this size means you don't have to wait so long to get some new worm castings, and the castings stay fresh.

How a vermihut works.

To start a vermihut, the avid worm grower must find a friend or store with vermiculture already started so they can give you a cup of worms to start your own vermihut. Worms eat rotting food, and enjoy most when the food is already started to decompose. So, take your food scraps and feed them to the worms! On top of the freshly fed food, I always put a layer of local dirt, and on top of that, I put a layer of shredded paper.

Depending on both how much you feed them, and the ambient temperature (ideal is 20 deg Celsius) the worms live in, I feed my worms about once a week.

Once the first bin is fully eaten, place the second bin on top and start feeding the worms in that bin. The worms will start to migrate from the first bin up to the second, and eventually to the third bin in what is known as a vertical migration route. Once they reach and are feeding the third bin, the top bin, most of the worms should be out of the first bin, the bottom bin. Once you're needing a fourth bin, you then empty the worm castings (vermicompost) from the bottom bin to feed your plants! And place the newly emptied bin onto the top and start feeding the worms from that bin. A never ending cycle!
