Said to be a favorite model of playwright Tennessee Williams, the Olivetti Studio 44 portable manual typewriter oozes class, mid century style, ease of use, and heavyweight durability. Easy on the eyes AND practical - a rare combo! This listing is for a fabulous, vintage, mid-century portable manual typewriter with lockable case and even includes the original key. Aesthetically in very good vintage condition, this typewriter would give your study or office a truly genuine Mad Men look, or imagine it as a super cool prop at a wedding reception! Taking into account its age, we offer it for sale purely as a display item, as DollFood gives no warranty to its operation. Although based on minimal testing, perhaps with a new ribbon, some work on a few sticky keys, and bit of TLC, it just might capture your lovesick poetry, heartfelt thank you notes, or even your next New York Times bestseller with panache.

As far as the aesthetics go, this machine is in very good vintage condition -- beautiful blue with some usage marks and scratches, particularly on one corner/side, but otherwise, pretty good for its age. The dark gray or light black plastic keys are all in super shape. A perfect robin's egg blue with a very cool, almost pasta-like purposeful "wrinkle" (think ravioli) to the metal "curtain" found right above the keyboard, this typewriter would give your study or office a truly genuine Mad Men look, without being too overbearing since it is the portable size rather than the humongous desk size. Although smaller in stature since it's one of Olivetti's portables, it is HEFTY made mostly of metal and super sturdy. Measures approximately 15" x 13-1/2" x 4-1/2".

Labeled with two tastefully inset metal plates: the one on the front reads, "underwood - olivetti," while the one on the back reads, "olivetti studio 44, MADE IN OLIVETTI PLANT - BARCELONA (SPAIN)." There is also a tone-on-tone blue indented symbol on the upper left hand side right below the paper roller that must be a logo for Olivetti - VERY retro and ultra cool!

With Olivetti you get unique design and class, and even the cool but super sturdy case speaks to this with its unusual shape and design. LOVE the aged antique brass hardware and handsome faux leather mottled ivory exterior finish! The inside of the case features several fabric covered and plastic inset protective pieces to help corral and safeguard the typewriter nicely during transit. Keeping in mind its age, the inside shows some staining and grime, but it's understandable since it has done its job protecting the typewriter beautifully.

If you purchase this typewriter, you are agreeing to buy it "as is" since DollFood makes no guarantees on usability for vintage electronics. If you plan to use it for your next novel, you will want to have it inspected, reconditioned, cleaned, and have the ribbon replaced which is evidently a fairly easy fix. We noticed that there are a handful of sticky keys so that is one of the reasons you'll definitely want it serviced if you plan to use it for anything other than the occasional brief typing.

Since it's a manual typewriter, there is no cord or electricity to worry about, so no need to worry about rewiring anything. Just think, with this manual typewriter, all you wonderful authors out there can even type in a remote cabin with no electricity by candle- or firelight! How incredibly romantic!

This typewriter features amazing mid-century curves and design, in addition to being a much sought after find for writers around the world! It has bright shiny chrome accents with no rust apparent from the outside whatsoever, and an elegantly shaped and extra large end to the carriage return that cleverly folds in on itself so you can easily tuck it into its case for typing on the go (see video).
