I have never seen anything quite like this unique pendant! A beautifully detailed cherub stands atop a brass/bronze-set cabochon of speckled green art glass. Hung from a long brass chain or other necklace of your choosing, this exquisite adornment will be the centerpiece of your outfit! Whether a gift for yourself or someone special, it is sure to become a prized addition to any jewelry box.
This piece is unsigned, which makes it challenging to date. As I said, I've never seen anything else like it in all my research, but...the cherub was a popular motif in Art Nouveau decor and jewelry. Brass/bronze jewelry was favored in the 1910s-1920s, especially by Czech designers, who used a lot of art glass like this...although figural styles are rarely seen in Czech designs. Art glass cabochons similar to this are seen in jewelry from the Victorian era well through the 1950s, so again, it's hard to place! My guess, though, is that it is from the late 1910s or early 1920s. The figural subject, level of detail, use of bronze instead of base/pot metal, and style of setting on the cabochon say "Art Nouveau" to me, so that's what I'm going with. If you have any info or corrections to add, please let me know!
This piece of jewelry came from my Great Aunt Mary, who shared with me her love of sparkly vintage things. She volunteered at the Seattle Goodwill from the 50s - 70s, which is where she acquired her glittering hoard. I have curated the best of these treasures to share with other collectors; I hope you enjoy going through her jewelry box as much as I did!
