What are Air Plants/Tillandsia?

What most people refer to as Air Plants are actually Tillandsia. This is important to know because Air Plants refer to many other species of plants that have different needs such as orchids, mosses, liverworts, some succulents, ferns and algae. Tillandsia are the largest genus of the Bromeliad family with over 600 species! Tillandsia are Epiphytes meaning they grow on rocks, trees, and other plant life without being parasitic or taking nutrients from the host. They have an underdeveloped root system that is used solely for attaching themselves. Tillandsia are not to be planted in soil. They should only be placed or “planted” on materials that wick away moisture, such as sand, orchid bark or nothing at all!

How do Air Plants/Tillandsia Survive?

Tillandsia take all their nutrients in through their leaves using these nifty little things called Trichomes. Trichomes are essentially hairs that grow on the surface of the leaves. Some are denser and easier to see than others while some you can’t see at all unless looking through a magnifying glass. Also, important to note, Tillandsia need water. Because they are commonly known as Air Plants there is a misunderstanding that they do not need any care at all. Most Tillandsia need a dunk or mist one to two times per week. It is also a good idea to make sure they have good air circulation avoiding containers or terrariums with lids.

Where do Air Plants/Tillandsia come from?

Their natural habitat is mostly warm regions throughout Mexico, Central and South America. They can be found in rain forests, deserts, swamps and a wide range of elevations from sea level up to 9,000 feet high!

Our greenhouse, where we grow and care for our plants, is located right here on the same property as our home. Our plants have constant oversight and care, this makes all the difference in the health and beauty of our plants. Our plants are fertilized regularly, spaced appropriately and given the exact amount of light they need to flourish as they grow. We painstakingly cherry pick the plants for your order. Materials: Live Plant, Air Plant, Tillandsia, Pruinosa

The Tillandsia Pruinosa Guatemala is a smaller air plant known for is its highly dense, fuzzy trichomes with legs that tend to spread out. This one can blush a beautiful deep reddish purple when grown in high light. Pruinosa Guatemala has an exotic nice shape and produces a bright pink flower.

Approximate size: 2-4 inches tall or wide.

These plants are low maintenance, making them a great choice for people who are new to indoor plants.

They need regular daily indirect or filtered sunlight (so fine for desks, shelves, bathrooms or bedrooms). A weekly water is all they require - although you can always give them a mist in between if they look a little dry.

Air plants prefer regular air circulation, so we suggest open terrariums rather than the kind with lids.

We stock an air plant fertilizer which is ideal for this plant - check out the 'Supplies' section of our shop to see more. We also have a wide range of fillers which you can use as a base in any plant pot you might use. Orchid bark is a great choice for this!
