I started this series with the middle part, surprisingly. "Moby Dick" was a stand-alone linocut for some time. I got back to it after some time and just sink into this theme. Every work in this series is carefully prepared, designed, carved and printed by hand. I wanted to touch many aspects of nautical theme, sea theme: the link between us, humans and the overwhelming power of the element. The thin line we dare to walk - setting sails, crossing seas, hunting and being hunted. Longing for safe place during storms and providing this place. We try to show the sea belongs to us. But no - we belong to the sea.

Linocut is an art technique of hand carving a desired shape (mirrored) on linoleum tile. It's time consuming process that doesn't forgive mistakes. The errors such as careless chisel cutting or badly planned lines are very hard or even impossible to undo and you have to start everything again (or at least cut out the entire defective piece of lino). After that the ink is carefully applied onto linoleum with the special roller. Its very important to control the amount of the ink on roller and linoleum and keep an eye on even distribution of ink on lino. The last phase is the careful pressing the ink onto paper. There are few tools to do it: spoons, special barens or professional presses. The print need to dry right amount of time depending of used ink.
