This is a very attractive brooch indeed and a real collector's piece. A large circular hammered pewter brooch featuring a gorgeous pale ice-blue Moonglow glass cabochon. Around the central glass cabochon are raised S-shaped wavy lines forming a chain around the centre.
Dating from the Arts & Crafts era back in Edwardian times, this was probably hand-crafted by a real artisan who specialised in the hand-stamped pewter style. The cabochon is made of beautiful Moonglow glass in a pretty pale ice-blue colour. This probably came from Bohemia, now part of the Czech Republic, where glass-making was a very old established tradition, producing thousands of buttons, beads and cabochon stones in plain glass like this, or the traditional Czech Peking glass, which is mottled and many layered.

This has a handmade hammered pewter frame hammered over the edges of the brassy base metal backing plate, and the green glass cabochon is well set into the front. It measures roughly 4.5cms in diameter (1 3/4") and has the early Edwardian rollover clasp which had been recently invented, and was just taking off. So coupled with the pretty Moonglow glass stone, this is a truly wonderful Arts & Crafts brooch. These pewter brooches often have ceramic cabochons, and if you are lucky they may be original Ruskin stones. This one however has the tell-tale light-bending properties of Moonglow glass. No mistaking it !!
