Although this dress has a size label, it has no manufacturer’s label. It is quite beautifully made with French and covered seams throughout. The fabric is a pale lemon cotton with a fine rib. The front has two pleats on either side of center front as well as a central inverted pleat. Above the latter are three embroidered chocolate brown dots with white stitching surrounding them, like faux buttons. The dress is sleeveless with a flutter ruffle in white batiste at armhole. Edge of ruffle has tiny brown embroidered overcast stitches. Collar construction is interesting and unlike anything that I have seen. The collar is basically a white batiste frill that is hand smocked in brown and yellow in front. There are appliquéd “patches” at front and back of each collar piece. The front pieces are batiste with a scalloped applique, bordered in brown overcast embroidery. The back ones are solid white batiste. The back yoke is high and closed with a hook and eye. These are slightly rusted, but do not show under the collar. Below, closure is a snap. One of the snap pieces was sewn on incorrectly so that closure was twisted. ( You can see this in back photos.). I have since corrected this to properly close. Back skirt is gathered and hem is 3.5” deep. A white batiste sash closes at back waist. Condition is very good. Besides the slight rust under the hook and eye pieces, there is a pin dot opening on back left flutter. This has been mended. The is also the faintest of pin dot marks on rear right collar. I treated this repeatedly and was able to lighten it, but not entirely remove it. Due to the delicate nature of the batiste, I was leery of using more stain removers in the event they produced a hole where the stain had been. This mark is barely noticeable as is. I estimate that this would be a modern size 1.
