Welcome to the Lazy Crow Tarot Deck! This product is the culmination of a surprisingly successful Indiegogo campaign, and I'm happy to share the outcome with you. I hope you enjoy this unique, striking, fun deck featuring minimalistic characters and splashy watercolor backgrounds.
The designs that make up this tarot deck are a confluence of a bunch of different styles. In my normal artistic life, I specialize in traditional Celtic and Norse drawings, paintings, and carvings (see my other work here), and you do see a bit of those worlds creeping in at the edges of this deck. But the truth is, this project has been an exercise in doing the exact opposite of my normal routine. Where most of my art is intricately, punishingly detailed, the art of the Lazy Crow Tarot Deck is incredibly stripped-down, with most of the images making use of as few lines and shapes as possible, and abstract watercolor wash backgrounds.
The minimalist use of straight lines and smooth curves abstracts the familiar forms of people, animals, objects, and landscapes in a way that is inviting and endearing, and the hard black lines play against the watercolor wash backgrounds (courtesy of the very excellent Kate Cragoe, whose other work can be found here) making the deck very fun to flip through!
I’ll also note that, while I wasn’t originally intending to make a social statement with this deck, tarot cards are too often very light on diversity of representation, so I tried to correct that a bit, including varied body types, gender presentations, different shades of skin and hair, and even a depiction of “The Lovers” that invites the viewer to consider whether they’re looking at two straight couples, two gay couples, a group of polyamorous lovers, or simply a bunch of good friends standing around naked for some reason. (Don't act like you don't have friends who do that.)
In short, this deck is fun, accessible, comedic at times, and a joy to look through and play with! Get your own deck and enjoy the art and divinatory possibilities for yourself!
